Against Queer Presentism - The Drift
#lgbt
|
This implicit chronology — and Either/Or’s conceit of self-revision — is one example of a broader trend in queer literature that we might call queer presentism: a Whig history of sexuality that positions today’s LGBTQ+ writers as liberators of the closeted past. Queer presentism canonizes contemporary texts, but elides or delegitimizes older queer lives and artworks, specifically those predating the twentieth century. It’s been almost 50 years since Michel Foucault’s History of Sexuality dispelled the “repressive hypothesis”: the theory holding that the rise of bourgeois capitalism suppressed discussion of sexual acts and deviant sexuality. Yet, we don’t seem to have internalized this lesson. In fact, our continued belief in the “repressive hypothesis” itself ends up repressing a great deal of queer history.

John Weiss Was Here | LGBTQ Oral History Digital Collaboratory

Artist, teacher, bon vivant, “The Best Gay Dad Ever,” dog’s best friend; remembering John Weiss in love and leather. On a sunny day in early March 2024, Kirk Cederwahl finally had his first ever zoom call. I don’t know how he managed to avoid the entire zoom process over the last four years, but it was fitting that Kirk was willing to endure zoom’s tech support torture seminar to chat with me about his recent donation of the John Weiss Collection to The ArQuives: Canada’s LGBTQ2+ Archives. John Wiess (1946-2017) was many things to many people. John was an artist and middle-school art teacher up in North Bay, a spirited host who adamantly refused to cook a single thing, and such a gregarious misanthrope that he actively sprinted away from people he didn’t want to talk to in public. Kirk spent years sprinting after a bolting John; and with good reason. Kirk was John’s boy and John was Kirk’s daddy.

What use will I put what I have learned from Bob and his older gay male circuit party that I attended? There are people more radical than I am, more alert to what is going on in the social interstices between cultures or seemingly marginal communities, such as science fiction, which are changing day to day, or just those who know what buttons to push.

Top or Bottom: How do we desire? – The New Inquiry
#lgbt
|
I think what is going on is that people have illusions and uncalibrated expectations about the frequency and ease of casual sex for other queers, how much negotiation and take-it-as-it-comes there really is. I frequently hear this language from people who are very inexperienced, who use this language to establish distinction for themselves: as worldly, as passive and innocent, as having conquered hang-ups, as having a disciplined body, as having a longer sweep of historical consciousness, etc. As long as it’s all talk, bottoming is positioned as a virtuous sexuality, though things of course get messier when it gets real. But commonly this is a way for people with no cruising culture and no cruising skills to assert a conditionally virtuous sexuality in public.

On Hyperpersonalized Sexual Identity | by Kravitz M. | An Injustice!
#lgbt
|
It’s often unhealthy to hyper-analyze your sexuality to the point where how you experience your attraction pattern(s) changes where you belong. It often distresses the person trying to examine themselves and can leave them worried over if they’re in the “right” category, which is enough of a problem with labels with significant wiggle room. This is why the idea that broader terms are somehow more restrictive is baffling. Continuously breaking labels down and creating terminology for each facet of one’s identity shrinks communities until it’s just one person convinced that they’re the only one who relates to their experiences. It isolates people and ignores the importance of individuality within a collective identity. Both of these elements are what make a community a community.

Barbara Hammer’s Exit Interview | The New Yorker
#death

I asked Hammer if she would sit for an “exit interview,” and she found the idea delightful. We spent two mornings together, in February. Because both the disease and the drugs that she is taking for pain are affecting her ability to use language, Hammer at times asked Burke to step in when she couldn’t find the words to describe images she could see clearly in her mind. The arrangement made it easier to talk about the events, ideas, and work to which Burke has been a witness, though earlier decades of Hammer’s life were harder for her to describe.

“I was like, ‘Okay, unless he has a 12-inch, candy-cane cock and can fuck around corners, his dick’s not getting in him,” Fuller recalled. “So you guys need to go back and figure out where holes are.”

It was a very small table, and the legs were wobbly, and the napkins didn’t match the tablecloth, and the plates were chipped and some of the forks were missing, but the food was real. To eat the food from the Hobbit’s table meant playing an elaborate game of pretend about things that emphatically weren’t food, but that I was going to eat anyways. But suddenly playing that game of pretend and eating that not-food felt different and sort of sad and not at all appetizing. and thank god for that.
