- It was a very small table, and the legs were wobbly, and the napkins didn’t match the tablecloth, and the plates were chipped and some of the forks were missing, but the food was real. To eat the food from the Hobbit’s table meant playing an elaborate game of pretend about things that emphatically weren’t food, but that I was going to eat anyways. But suddenly playing that game of pretend and eating that not-food felt different and sort of sad and not at all appetizing. and thank god for that.
