What does it mean for a journalist today to be a Serious Reader? - Columbia Journalism Review
#reading

|
“It would be brutally unkind and unrealistic to say, Oh, all of you should be reading Stendhal. You’ll be better BuzzFeeders for it,” he had said. “But at the same time, that’s true, and I think the whole history of great American journalism shows that’s true.” BEING WELL-READ is a transcendent achievement similar to training to run 26.2 miles, then showing up for a marathon in New York City and finding 50,000 people there. It is at once superhuman and pedestrian.

Wil Wheaton explains why we should separate art from artists - Upworthy

I can't speak for the other actors, even the ones I know. But I will tell you, as an abuse survivor myself who never wanted to be in front of the camera when he was a kid: it's really okay for you to enjoy the work. The work is good and meaningful, and if nobody is going to watch it because of what one piece of shit did two decades ago, what was it all for? I'm not the pope of chilitown, so take this for what it's worth: I believe that when some piece of art is deeply meaningful to a person, for whatever reason, that art doesn't belong to the person who created it, if it ever did. It belongs to the person who found something meaningful in the art.

Authenticity or Integrity - Jennet Ingle
#music
#thoughts

This distinction – between allowing your instrument to authentically sound like it wants to, because why SHOULDN’T it be ok for an oboe to sound like an oboe, versus working hard to make it sound like the most ideal version of itself – is really interesting to me and maps onto something else I’ve been thinking about. I have a “voice” I put on when I’m speaking to students, to reed customers, to blog readers. It’s always positive, it always sees possibilities in the world rather than limitations, and it always tries to be helpful and loving. This voice is not inauthentic to me, it’s not a made-up construct that doesn’t match my personality. That voice IS me, but it’s not ALWAYS the way I feel at any exact moment. Sometimes I’m discouraged, or grumpy, or I haven’t slept well. But when I write or speak to people, I consider it my responsibility to bring this public persona, the best version of me, to the fore. That’s professionalism, that’s integrity.

A Divine Dissatisfaction – Just Think of It
#thoughts
|
“But,” I said, “when I see my work I take for granted what other people value in it. I see only its ineptitude, inorganic flaws, and crudities. I am not pleased or satisfied.” “No artist is pleased.” “But then there is no satisfaction?” “No satisfaction whatever at any time,” she cried out passionately. “There is only a queer divine dissatisfaction, a blessed unrest that keeps us marching and makes us more alive than the others.”

Is It Too Scary?

Women shouldn’t have to work for nothing, I tell my sister, and neither should artists, but I feel the way some women once felt about the Wages for Housework movement—if I were paid wages for the work of making art, then everything I do would be monetized, everything I do would be subject to the logic of this economy. And if art became my job, I’m afraid that would disturb my universe. I would have nothing unaccountable left in my life, nothing worthless, except for my child.
