All Star by Smash Mouth but it's partwritten for four voices following the compositional rules established by Bach, which include (but are not limited to) sounding every note of a given chord, avoiding parallel motion octaves and fifths, doubling the root of non-inverted chords, resolving leading tones appropriately, and of course, following the established chart of chord progressions to prevent retrogression. And it's fully notated with Roman numeral and figured bass analysis, as well as non-chord tones. It's not perfect okay, crucify me; I know there's some stuff Bach wouldn't have done but I had to keep it interesting. I was going to mark cadences as well but there really aren't any good cadential phrases except for some awkward place in the middle of the song so I didn't bother. Whatever. And there's an organ. Climaxes with some Whitacre junk and The Lick. Happy freaking Channukkah Jacob

#music #thoughts | This distinction – between allowing your instrument to authentically sound like it wants to, because why SHOULDN’T it be ok for an oboe to sound like an oboe, versus working hard to make it sound like the most ideal version of itself – is really interesting to me and maps onto something else I’ve been thinking about. I have a “voice” I put on when I’m speaking to students, to reed customers, to blog readers. It’s always positive, it always sees possibilities in the world rather than limitations, and it always tries to be helpful and loving. This voice is not inauthentic to me, it’s not a made-up construct that doesn’t match my personality. That voice IS me, but it’s not ALWAYS the way I feel at any exact moment. Sometimes I’m discouraged, or grumpy, or I haven’t slept well. But when I write or speak to people, I consider it my responsibility to bring this public persona, the best version of me, to the fore. That’s professionalism, that’s integrity.

The most favored ensemble, determined from a rating by participants of their favorite instruments in combination, comprises a moderately sized group (three to ten instruments) consisting of guitar, piano, saxophone, bass, drums, violin, cello, synthesizer, with low male and female vocals singing in rock/r&b style. The favorite lyrics narrate a love story, and the favorite listening circumstance is at home. The only feature in lyric subjects that occurs in both most wanted and unwanted categories is "intellectual stimulation." Most participants desire music of moderate duration (approximately 5 minutes), moderate pitch range, moderate tempo, and moderate to loud volume, and display a profound dislike of the alternatives. If the survey provides an accurate analysis of these factors for the population, and assuming that the preference for each factor follows a Gaussian (i.e. bell-curve) distribution, the combination of these qualities, even to the point of sensory overload and stylistic discohesion, will result in a musical work that will be unavoidably and uncontrollably "liked" by 72 plus or minus 12% (standard deviation; Kolmogorov-Smirnov statistic) of listeners.
